Afghan students and students from other countries can now take advantage of this scholarship to study and see the beauty of Belgium. It allows Afghans to continue their studies in Belgium during the PhD phase.
This scholarship, which is available to students from Afghanistan and many other selected countries, is called the Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2025 for Global South in Belgium.

The following are excluded from the required mobility plan:
- Made for each of the chosen countries
- intended for people pursuing doctoral degrees
- Applicants who can show that they are unable to begin their four-year PhD research with a research stay in Ghent may request an exception to the mobility policy. The southern partner, the university/research center, requires that students successfully finish a PhD program at their university before beginning further research.
- Afghanistan is among the many countries that can apply.
- Submit your application before February 19, 2025, at 23:59 (Belgian time).
Benefits:
A monthly tuition payment of EUR 310 will be made.
The 8,000 euro award will be used to cover the Ghent University promoter’s operating costs and travel expenses, as well as those of local promoters and students.
Qualifications and requirements:
Applicants must be from one of the aforementioned countries and be citizens of a developing country.
The candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university must submit proposals together. Ghent University encourages more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. A supervisor at Ghent University may therefore recommend two candidates per call if they are of different genders.
